![]() Justice Scalia Speaks out for Freedom of Religious Expression
Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia says that our nation's courts have gone too far in prohibiting the freedom of religious expression. Speaking at Religious Freedom Day in Fredricksburg, Virginia last Saturday, January 11, Justice Scalia said that, while the government may not promote religion directly, the framers of the Constitution never intended to have every reference to religious faith stripped from our public life. He said that the Constitution has been misinterpreted both by the Supreme Court and lower courts to mean that there is no place for religious faith in public life--something never intended by our Founding Fathers.
Our Constitution is being interpreted too liberally, Scalia contended. "It is a Constitution that morphs while you look at it like Plasticman," he said. "That is contrary to our whole tradition, to 'in God we trust' on the coins, to Thanksgiving proclamations, to [congressional] chaplains, to tax exemption for places of worship, which has always existed in America."
