Free Range Farm
History
Free Range Farm has been operated by the same family for three consecutive generations. The first generation patriarch, Elias, acquired the property in 1890. At that time, a cotton gin, saw mill, and grist mill--all powered by steam--were in operation on the farm.
There was a school on the farm that served the community until 1923. At that time, the school was discontinued due to consolidation within the county.
The school building was then used for intermittent worship services which eventually became regular until a new church was erected about a mile west of the farm.
The school building was later dismantled, and the lumber was used to help construct the first house the second generation farmer (Homer) and his wife (Clatine) lived in. Later this house was moved from its original site to an adjacent hill to serve as home for Homer's sister Ellen after her retirement, along with their mother.
Homer's family was and is now living in the first generation farm house.
Eric (third generation) and wife are living on the family farm just down the hill from the old homeplace.
Tristan (fourth generation) and family: wife, daughter and son (son: fifth generation) are living in the house built from the school/church building. They are building on the farm below the highway.
